Judea

Joo-dee´uh

The Greco-Latin form of Judah. The geographical term “Judea” is introduced in Ezra-Nehemiah to designate the area of the Jewish state under the Persians, which included only a relatively small area around Jerusalem. Thus the term is sometimes used in a limited sense to refer to that region as distinct from Samaria, Galilee, Perea, and Idumea—areas that might also be included in references to “Judah” in an extended sense (Luke 1:5).
