Massah

And Meribah (mas´uh, mair´i-bah), according to tradition the spring in the wilderness where Israel tested the Lord. Following the gift of manna to the people in the wilderness, the people of Israel complained about the need for water. The Lord instructed Moses to strike a rock with his rod in order to provide for their needs. Moses named the place Massah (“Test”) and Meribah (“Quarrel”), because there the Hebrews tested and quarreled with the Lord (Exod 17:7; Deut 6:16; Deut 9:22; Deut 33:8; Ps 95:8).
